CNG cylinder inspection labels are applied to CNG cylinders to show the PASS or FAIL result of a detailed CNG cylinder inspection by a qualified CNG fuel system inspector. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) safety standard for CNG fuel cylinders, FMVSS 304, specifies a visual inspection of every cylinder at these intervals:
- After any fire or accident, regardless of vehicle GVWR.
- For vehicles 10,000 pounds GVWR or less, at least every 3 years or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first.
- For vehicles over 10,000 pounds GVWR, at least every 12 months.
NGV industry best practice is to inspect the entire CNG fuel system on the same schedule.
AFVi recommends that a certified CNG fuel system inspector apply the appropriate label to each cylinder after every inspection, following the Compressed Gas Association’s (CGA) industry standard for CNG cylinder inspection, CGA C-6.4:
- A blue “Passed CNG Cylinder Inspection” label is used when a cylinder shows Level 1 or no damage and passes inspection.
- A red “Failed CNG Cylinder Inspection” label is used when a cylinder shows Level 2 or 3 damage, or the manufacturer’s label is missing or unreadable so the cylinder can’t be positively identified.
Each label records the inspector’s name and certification number, the inspection date, the cylinder serial number, the VIN and the next inspection due.
You may order CNG Cylinder Inspection labels directly from our website for $2.50 per label. Labels are sold in packs of 20.
