Why Certify Fuel System Inspectors?
Fuel system inspector certification is not about completing training—it’s about proving competency.
In high-pressure CNG and hydrogen systems, mistakes carry real consequences.
Inspection quality directly impacts safety, compliance, and organizational risk. Technicians must be able to apply codes and standards, recognize defects, and make correct inspection decisions in real-world conditions. Training alone—regardless of format or provider—does not verify that capability.
AFVi certification is developed independently of training and is based on industry standards and job-task requirements—not course content or specific manufacturer equipment.
It establishes a clear, objective benchmark aligned with recognized codes and standards—effectively defining the expected standard of care for fuel system inspectors.
It confirms that inspections are performed by qualified personnel, to a defined standard, with decisions that can be justified when it matters most.

AFVi Fuel System Inspector Certification
AFVi’s Fuel System Inspector Certification provides an independent assessment of the knowledge and application of skills necessary for technicians to competently conduct a fuel system inspection according to all applicable codes, standards and industry best practices. Fuel system inspections must be conducted by well-trained and qualified technicians. Application approval requires proof of fuel system inspector training.
Design and Oversight
AFVi’s Fuel System Inspector Certification is designed according to the requirements for a professional certification program prescribed by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA). To ensure quality, uniformity and impartiality, the certification program is overseen by an independent Advisory Board composed of cylinder, fuel system and vehicle manufacturers, as well as end users.
Exam Content
The content of AFVi’s rigorous certification programs has been identified through a job study of the tasks required to be performed by Fuel System Inspectors. Content is periodically updated as needed based on additional job studies, updates to applicable codes and standards or other factors.
The exam consists of 60 questions that measure the participant’s knowledge and ability to apply skills and competencies required to perform a thorough fuel system inspection on vehicles according to all applicable national codes, standards and industry best practices.
Live and Online Testing
There are two modes of testing for AFVi’s Fuel System Inspector Certification: (1) a live-proctored exam, offered in conjunction with live group training; or (2) an online, electronically-proctored exam that can be taken individually by the participant at their convenience.
