CNG cylinder inspection labels are applied to CNG cylinders to demonstrate the “Pass” or “Fail” result of a detailed CNG cylinder inspection. These inspections are required by the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) FMVSS 304 which states that a detailed visual inspection of all CNG cylinders must be conducted by qualified CNG fuel system inspectors at specific intervals:
- After any fire or accident, regardless of vehicle GVWR.
- For vehicles less than 10,000 pounds GVWR, fuel system inspections must be conducted every 3 years or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first.
- For vehicles 10,000 pounds GVWR or greater, CNG fuel system inspections must be conducted at least every 12 months.
During the inspection process, CNG fuel system inspectors must apply the appropriate inspection label to the CNG cylinder:
- A blue “Passed CNG Cylinder Inspection” label is used when a cylinder exhibits Level 1 or no damage, and pass inspection
- A “Failed CNG Cylinder Inspection” label is used when a cylinder exhibits Level 2 or 3 damage, or the manufacturer’s label is missing or obliterated such that positive identification is not possible
