For 38 years — first as NGVi, now as AFVi — we’ve done one thing: make the people who touch alternative fuel vehicles provably competent. We don’t build trucks. We don’t sell fuel systems. That independence is the whole point.

Top US Alt-Fuel Fleets Train Here
Why We Exist
Fleets are diversifying fuel. Somebody has to keep that safe.
Today’s fleets run natural gas next to diesel, hydrogen next to electric. Every new fuel platform adds a new failure mode — and a new set of hands that needs to know exactly what they’re doing. That’s the gap AFVi fills, for every member of the workforce who interacts with the vehicle, not just the technician holding the wrench.
"Provide the highest-quality technical training and consulting on alternative fuel vehicles and fueling for the transportation industry in North America."
AFVI MISSION STATEMENT
Who We Train
Competence has to run the full chain of custody — anywhere the vehicle meets a human.
Hold ASE Training Accreditation in the U.S. — AFVi is one of them
Accreditation
The only independent ASE-accredited provider in alternative fuels.
ASE accreditation means our organization has been reviewed against established standards from the automotive training industry and approved by peers — a bar fewer than 50 organizations in the U.S. have cleared. When safety is on the line, “trust us” isn’t a standard. Third-party review is.
From natural gas pioneers to the multi-fuel standard.
Competitors arrived when alternative fuels got popular. We were here when they were hard.
1988
NGVi is founded
The Natural Gas Vehicle Institute opens its doors as CNG fleets are still an experiment — building the training discipline the industry didn’t have yet.
1990s–2000s
The CNG training standard takes shape
Fuel System Inspector certification, inspection forms, and pass/fail labeling become the working vocabulary of natural gas fleet compliance across North America.
2010s
ASE accreditation & OEM partnership
Peer-reviewed accreditation places the institute among fewer than 50 U.S. training organizations — and the Cummins × AFVi Master Tech program embeds certification into an OEM pathway.
2023
NGVi becomes AFVi
More than natural gas: the Alternative Fuel Vehicle Institute expands the same certification rigor to propane, hydrogen, and electric platforms.
TODAY
The multi-fuel certification authority
25,000+ professionals trained. Every one of the top 10 U.S. alternative fuel fleets. Four fuel platforms, one independent standard.
The People Behind the Standard
Instructors and operators. Not salespeople.
Small team, deep bench — the same people who write the curriculum answer the phone.
