EVs utilize high-voltage AC and DC systems, and without proper safety training and procedures, can cause personal injury, severe burns, electric shock, or fatal injury. This Level 1 course qualifies technicians and other employees as “electrically aware” according to the ASE-defined levels of EV technicians. Focused on safety, this course prepares technicians and other employees to work safely on or around non-high voltage systems of hybrid, battery electric and other high-voltage vehicles.
Prerequisites
Basic electrical training
First Aid Training, including CPR
Who Should Attend?
This course is designed for anyone who works on or around electric vehicles, but does not perform work on high-voltage systems or components. This includes technicians and other workers who:
- Perform basic preventive maintenance and repairs not related to the high-voltage systems or components (tire rotations, etc.)
- Handle non-high-voltage components of EVs
- Are involved in non-maintenance areas of EV fleet operations
- Fleet or dealer service managers and supervisors
- Corporate/agency safety managers
- Risk management staff
Course Objectives
- Define the duties, responsibilities, and limitations of Levels 1, 2 and 3 EV technicians
- Identify types of vehicles using high-voltage systems
- Compare basic operation of hybrid and battery electric vehicle types
- Identify high-voltage systems and components, and circuits; identify and interpret warning lights, and labels
- List safety hazards and risks associated with electric vehicle repair
- Describe safety systems installed on electric vehicles to prevent injury
- Discuss the devices used in a maintenance area to designate whether an EV is energized or non-energized and to mark off EV service safety zones
- Explain the process for aiding a person subjected to high-voltage shock
- Describe proper emergency response procedures and equipment to be used in the event of an injury or electrocution
- Explain the methods for safely charging EVs
- Demonstrate the ability to implement the learned EV safety practices, procedures, and OEM guidelines
